A mysterious virus originating in Africa triggers a fatal epidemic in the USA. Major Carmen Travis from Usamriid, the plague research department of the US Army, travels to the jungles of Gabon in an attempt to identify the virus. However, all she finds are deserted villages... until she comes across an exhausted American woman called Holly Parker. Holly is attempting to make her way to the jungle fort where her husband Jonathan and her daughters Lucy and Alex are taking refuge. But when Carman and Holly reach the fort they find the twin girls are the only people left alive.

Back in the USA Carmen Travis tries to develop a serum based on a blood sample taken from Lucy, who has apparently developed immunity to the virus; this would save the life of her sick sister Alex and, it is hoped, stop the plague which is about to strike. A race against time begins, but now Carmen also comes across some very disturbing information: she is shown a secret file referring to an abandoned Army test facility. Her partner, Captain David Arends, goes to investigate and finds a diskette suggesting that the Army was conducting illegal experiments with a genetic research company called Gensystems...
