Part one of this two-part documentary deals with the northern regions of China. A German-Chinese television team consisting of nine people drove along the 600 km of the Silk Road in the summer of 1989, visiting places which were virtually inaccessible to Western tourists - including the forbidden city of Barkol. This four-week journey traversed a variety of landscapes and cultural areas, involving encounters with the ethnic groups who live here, including Kazaks, Tibetans, Hans and Mongols. These images provide a powerful impression of China as a multi-ethnic state.
